2014 Storytelling Event

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND, BRIAN STURM RETURNS!

Southwest Virginia Reading Council Presents:
“Deepening the Classroom Experience with Storytelling”
Tuesday, April 29, 2014
4:30-8:30 p.m. at Bristol VA Central Office, 220 Lee St. Bristol, VA  24201

We will explore how storytelling can increase children's immersion in classroom content by heightening how they CARE for stories and story characters; we will play story games in small groups to help us improvise stories and become more confident as storytellers (these games are wonderful to use with children to help them develop as storytellers in their own right); we will listen to folktales and discover how they can apply to various content areas; and we will explore how to bring props into our performances; and, of course, we will laugh, share, and have a great evening together. Let's "talk story!"

Brian began telling stories when he was very young, until his mother told him that lying was bad form. Then he started telling the truth, until his friends told him that was bad form. As an adult he switched to world folktales because those have been told for thousands 0f years, and they didn't seem to cause too much trouble. He's currently an associate professor at the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he trains children's librarians and teaches storytelling.
Enjoy a casual supper of Pizza, and Soft Drinks  followed by  a variety of homemade Cookie Treats  catered by  Mr. Joseph Marler.
